Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was interested in acting during her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal place for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she was already making her debut on television in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
